Renewable Heating Systems
If you are looking to replace your boiler or install a new heating system, have you considered a renewable heating system? Renewable heating systems use a renewable source of energy to heat the water that circulates around your heating system. Although these systems are typically more expensive to install compared with gas and oil-fired boilers, current government financial initiatives (such as the renewable heat incentive) can make renewable heating a favourable option to traditional fossil-fuel systems.
Renewable systems come in many different forms, but the main technologies available today are:
- Biomass boilers
Biomass boilers work in a similar way to traditional boilers except they burn biomass fuels instead of fossil fuels such as oil, LPG or natural gas. There are numerous types of biomass fuels but the main fuel types used in domestic and commercial biomass boilers are wood logs, wood pellets and wood chips. Learn more about biomass boilers.
- Ground-source heat pumps (GSHP)
Ground-source heat pumps circulate a fluid through a series of pipes laid in the ground, which collect low-level heat that is stored in the earth from energy absorbed from the sun. This fluid is pumped around the system by the heat pump, which then compresses the fluid to raise its temperature further. A heat exchanger then enables the energy in the fluid to heat the water that circulates around your central heating system. Read more about ground-source heat pumps.
- Air-source heat pumps (ASHP)
Air-source heat pumps operate in a similar fashion to ground-source heat pumps except that low-level heat is extracted from outside air. Read more about air-source heat pumps.
- Solar heating
Thermal vacuum-tube panels placed on a roof absorb heat from the sun which is very efficiently and effectively transferred into usable heat. Find out how you can benefit from solar heating.
